I was just reading on WWAY....is that you?

G-Momma --- 214 days ago -

Do you happen to have pictures of the cars condition so you can fight the tax??

un borracho --- 214 days ago -

Even if it is. If it really is just a junker that doesn't run. Then get rid of it and save the hassle. The problem is that someone does have a '74 that is in great shape. If they change the tax rate for you. Then everyone with an older model car will be hounding them for a break. Not sure it's worth the trouble.

Linda Bell --- 213 days ago -

The car is being fix so that it is drivable. But it is not worth $3400 dollars. Not sure it's worth the trouble Any time government does the people wrong it is worth the trouble. The tax department can not provide copies of the NC Valuable Manual that is to be used according to a NC Law that states all counties to use this guide. We found out from a ex tax department employee that the department goes out and looks for these autos on dealership lots and takes the value from there. Now is this a fair tax value---NO.

Linda Bell --- 213 days ago -

Yes that is me. I don't have time now but tonight I will copy and paste for everyone to see the laws that should apply to the tax on cars new and old.

Dae Yum Yum --- 213 days ago -

I think if you can have your house looked at and the tax value readjusted, why can't you do your car? I don't understand.

G-Momma --- 213 days ago -

I think it's BS to even be paying tax on the vehicle you own every year. A vehicle is NO asset---it's a liability. I think taxing on the VALUE of a car is a law that hurts less financially stable people...especially when it's assessed on the RETAIL VALUE. Can you imagine paying tax on your shoes every year based on the RETAIL VALUE???---after all you do use public sidewalks. ;) Same logic and it's stupid. It is not as if they don't get tax money each time you pump gasoline into the car.

Someone's got to pay for the government's trillon dollar debt! everytime I hear about "change"....makes me wanna puke! If the governement keeps it up, that is all we are going to have...change in our pockets.

un borracho --- 213 days ago -

Any time government does the people wrong it is worth the trouble. I agree with you, my point was that if you are NOT going to fix the car and jus let it sit there, then getting rid of it would be easier then battling something you're not likely to get changed anyway. As you said, however, you do plan to get it repaired so if it's worth it to you, then I can see that. Like 'G' said. Tax on personal property is just another way to spread the wealth and it's not very fair. Why punish someone because they work to pay for something. The 30% they take in income/SS/Medicare is punishment enough. I think it's funny at the SoTU Obama was talking about we needed to cut out the wastful spending, but then turned around and said we needed billions more to add onto this last stimulus package. Espcially when 2/3's of the last money has never been spent.

I just don't understand how the govt. thinks BORROWING more money from China and PRINTING fake money here is helping our economy. How many of us would loose our jobs with a mound of debt and try and SPEND OUR WAY OUT OF IT??? Even an 8 year old knows you can't spend money you don't have. And it's not GOOD MONEY when you go and print your own.

deborah --- 213 days ago -

That is why we can't/don't turn away China's products, because we owe them so much money. If you don't know how to run a business, you certainly don't know how to run the government. Basically all the government is, is a business. I know what has happened to some businesses that were in financial trouble and borrowed more money....they ended up going broke, instead of cutting back. Our government could cut WAY back. It would piss some people off and some wouldn't be getting anything for free, but we wouldn't be digging a bigger hole.

In Pender county if your vehicle has over 150,000 miles you can take by the tax office when you recieve your bill and they do reduce the tax.

moosetracks --- 211 days ago -

Cars that are 25 years old or older are evaluated under a different set of guidelines than newer vehicles .... A vehicle value is assigned as of January 1 of the year the tax bill is due. Taxpayers have 30 days after receiving a tax bill to appeal the valuation if they think it is inaccurate. “On the older cars, that happens more often ... Owners can submit documentation to prove that a vehicle has a lot of mileage, damage or other problems that would reduce its value. Or they can bring the vehicle in and they will look at it ... For more on the appeals process, visit the New Hanover County tax administration office website at ... www.nhcgov.com/AgnAndDpt/TAXS/Pages/FAQs.aspx

moosetracks, I have been on this web site and many more. I can tell you all kinds of things about the tax laws for cars. There is a class for antique cars (the tag you put on the car says antique) which are cars 35 years and older, if you don't want to drive the car then this is where to put it. No matter what the car is worth it is only value at $500 for tax. My beef is why would they allow someone who has a car worth thousands of dollars to value it at $500, when someone has a car that is 35 years or older and they just want to drive it for daily use has to pay a tax value of $3460 when the car is not worth even $500 if you were to sell it. The tax laws for cars is very unfair to the average person. My sebring is valued at $3690 and believe me if I could sell it for that I would not even have to think about it. Tax people fairly. I founded out yesterday that they are working to have the county tax for the cars to be paid at the DVM and not the tax office in the future. Government is taking all our money and leaving us with nothing. As a whole we all need to get involved in fighting for what is right and not let the government deny us our rights. We work hard for our money and the government should not be able to take it.
